In the electrical conductor wire industry copper is by far the most important material. The high conductivity and superior mechanical properties coupled with the cost offer a distinct advantage over silver or gold. Aluminium can be substituted for copper but only usually where weight is an issue. The level of residual impurities in copper varies from oxygen free grade at circa 5 to 10ppm oxygen through to tough pitch grade at circa 600ppm oxygen. Elemtex copper is of the highest purity as demanded by the elemental and stable isotope laboratories.
